A Day in the Life of an Applied Meteorologist

Not many people receive their career as a birthday present. But that is what happened to Logan Bundy, a member of the Everstream Analytics Applied Meteorology team.

“I grew up in a small town in rural central Illinois, and I have always been fascinated with the weather,” he explains.

“A tornado went through my hometown on my 12th birthday. When I saw the agricultural damage and the damage to buildings and the impact it had on people’s lives in my hometown, that was a turning point for me. I wanted to go into meteorology and understand how such a powerful force of nature could do this kind of damage.”

Logan’s academic journey took him from community college to a PhD in meteorology at Northern Illinois University.

Logan initially thought he would join the U.S. National Weather Service, but a chance meeting changed all that.

“I went to community college, where I played baseball for a couple of years, and then transferred to Northern Illinois University, where I got my undergrad in meteorology.

“At that time, I met Jon and Mark (Jon Davis, Chief Meteorologist, and Mark Russo, Chief Science Officer).

“They are the ones who introduced me to the idea of operational applied meteorology and how we can use weather data to help answer questions in agriculture and energy and supply chains,” he says.

“I started interning with them. I then went to Nebraska for my master’s, and continued to intern for them. Finally, I came back to Northern Illinois University for my PhD in meteorology.”

Logan completed his PhD in May 2026. His thesis focused on the impact of climate on crop conditions and yields in the United States. This research grew out of the work he had been doing at Everstream Analytics as an intern.

“My thesis was very agriculture focused. I assessed the historical trends and the future projections of crop conditions in the United States. Ever since meeting Jon and Mark, most of my research throughout my master’s and my PhD has been quantifying how climate might impact crop conditions and yield throughout the remainder of the 21st century.”

Working on Crop Sourcing and Modeling

Logan is the lead developer for the Everstream Analytics Crop Prediction solution. His work involves building and continuously improving models that translate weather forecasts into actionable insights about crop conditions and yields for clients.

He can apply these models to any crop, in any growing region of the world.

Logan’s work sits alongside the operational forecasting work done by the rest of the applied meteorology and climate team. This includes understanding predictive insights into extreme weather events, as well as tracking how weather and climate risk could impact different parts of the world through to 2100.

The team’s outputs feed into each other, allowing them to give clients a complete picture of current conditions and near-term risk.

“They’re looking deeply at forecasts and how forecasts change. I take that information and put it into our crop sourcing and crop condition models. All of us as a collective team can get together and really understand how crop conditions, and even further, how crop yields, might change over the next couple of weeks,” he explains.

For Logan and the Applied Meteorology team, the working day begins before most people are awake, at 5am Eastern Standard Time. The team releases two market digests six days a week for agricultural and energy markets. These are released before trading opens, giving clients a headstart knowing what to expect when the market opens.

In addition to daily digests and weekly reports, the Everstream Analytics Applied Meteorology team also schedules regular meetings with clients.

“We meet with clients to discuss where things are at, why conditions are where they are, and how they might change over the next couple of weeks and through the remainder of the growing season,” he says.

Translating Technical Knowledge into Actionable Insights

The connection between his technical work and real-world outcomes is what keeps Logan motivated.

“I’m taking a lot of what I learned throughout my PhD research and the theoretical component behind agronomy and how different weather factors impact crop growing stages. I’m taking a lot of that theoretical knowledge and putting that more quantitatively towards these models.”

Seeing the models deliver results that genuinely help clients manage supply chain risk makes the early mornings worthwhile.

“For me, it’s knowing that there are benefits for our clients. It’s all about anticipating risk. When we are able to successfully do that for a customer, I know that it is proving beneficial in a real-world setting. That’s what keeps me motivated — that end-to-end supply chain process and having successful outcomes because we’re able to anticipate any upcoming risks.”

Outside of work, Logan plays fast pitch softball and cycling, and enjoys live concerts, particularly heavy metal.

“I play fast pitch softball. As I mentioned, I played college baseball for a couple of years and then after that started getting into softball. Other than that, just trying to relax by going on bike rides or walks, things like that. I’m also big into music, so I like going to concerts as well.”
