Reflecting on 2024

How Everstream Intelligence Helped Clients Navigate 5 Key Risks

A look back at the top risks our experts identified for 2024, and how Everstream intelligence gave clients a competitive advantage, being the first to report the most relevant insights

Commodity Supply

Sourcing Under Pressure

In 2024, the world continued to grapple with significant commodity shortages sending ripples across global supply chains. Agricultural products faced a double-edged sword of climate change impacts, such as erratic weather patterns, and logistical disruptions that have stymied distribution channels. Energy resources, particularly oil and natural gas, were caught in the crossfire of geopolitical tensions, further tightening availability and escalating prices.

These shortages can wreak havoc on production and distribution processes, forcing industries to rethink their traditional supply chain models. Understanding critical sourcing connections, bottlenecks, and potential risks ahead of time can help companies prepare for potential shortages.

Everstream’s early warning system allowed a major semiconductor manufacturing company to shift their strategy around commodity buys for Nickel, Aluminum, Cobalt, Cadmium from their Supplier community before war broke out in a region that caused major bottlenecks and industry shortages. Acting weeks prior to 2x increase in price of Nickel, they saved major resources and protected operations.

Soybean shortage

Due to flood in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (May), Indonesia also experienced Soybean shortage in February due to Red Sea disruptions

Cocoa shortage

Ivory Coast and Ghana Cocoa shortage due to adverse weather and low harvest

Everstream Analytics provides clients with advanced, contextualized monitoring of critical commodity events related to metals, agricultural materials, pivotal mining locations, and more. This provides true end-to-end risk management from raw material to destination.

Cybersecurity

Navigating the Digital Landscape

As we navigated through 2024, the presence of national elections drew attention to an unsettling rise in cyber-attacks. These digital threats pose significant risks not only to the targeted nations but also to the intricate web of international supply chains. Consequently, businesses worldwide were on high alert for potential disruptions that could ripple across industries.

According to a CyberArk report, 93% of organizations have had two or more identity-related breaches in the past year. This year highlighted the need to understand supply chain network relationships and vulnerabilities to avoid major damage from cyberattacks – because often by the time word of a sub-tier network attack reaches a company, it is too late.

When the Crowdstrike cyber-attack occurred in July, it was an Everstream alert at 5 AM that allowed a logistics leader at a major multi-national technology company to sound the alarm before anyone else, including his corporate security team. With this information, the company was also able to notify 200 employees traveling at the time of potential massive flight cancellations—before the news hit the stands.

Environmental Regulations

Obligations and Opportunity

In 2024, a wave of new environmental regulations swept across the globe, profoundly affecting supply chains in industries like manufacturing, transportation, and energy. Sustainability mandates pushed companies to integrate more eco-friendly practices, altering the landscape of production and distribution.

These shifts have not only reshaped supply chains but also demanded that businesses innovate to remain compliant. As firms embrace these changes, they are not just complying with regulations but envisioning a future where their commitment to the environment enhances their brand reputation and long-term profitability.

Beverage manufacturing

First to report

By identifying and monitoring sub-tier networks with Everstream Analytics, one major beverage manufacturer identified a potential business risk with a trade relationship involving a sanctioned commodity supplier. This prompted immediate action, raising awareness in the organization to ensure the issue was addressed. By engaging with Tier-1 suppliers, the company secured assurances that mitigated the risk of the commodity entering the supply chain, thus avoiding significant fines and legal repercussions that could amount to 40% of the product's domestic value.

As the specific requirements and enactment dates for these regulations may change, one thing is clear. It is going to be mandatory for companies to understand their sub-tier supplier and sourcing relationships and their risks. On-the-ground intelligence to report potential risks first, targeted alerting technology, sub-tier mapping, strategic risk scoring, and legal expertise from Everstream combine to power clients with the steps they need to stay compliant and competitive, regardless of what’s next.

Geopolitical

Diplomacy and Disruptions

The situation was further complicated by trade restrictions, with both China and Taiwan imposing various constraints that affected the technology and goods flow. In response, countries have sought to diversify their semiconductor sources, reducing dependence on this volatile region.

This shift has stimulated investments in domestic semiconductor capabilities, fostering innovation and new international partnerships. Consequently, global supply chains are evolving, as companies and governments strive to create resilient networks capable of withstanding geopolitical upheavals.

Everstream analysts are often first to report on supply chain risks and disruptions in China, with boots on the ground to pick up local events before they hit the wire. When early warnings of military drills escalated tensions between China and Taiwan, a major manufacturing client received notice from Everstream before news spread and was able to inform other industry peers about the potential disruptions and take steps to mitigate operational impacts.

In the Everstream Platform, clients can plan for potential geopolitical disruptions by creating scenarios that help capture the network assets, lanes, shipments, and supplier facility impact of an event in a particular region or geospace. Utilizing this functionality, it is easy to prepare for a variety of possible situations and enact action plans for next steps.

Weather and Climate

Risk and Resilience

In 2024, extreme weather events exposed vulnerabilities within global supply chains, affecting sectors like agriculture, logistics, energy, and manufacturing. Severe hurricanes devastated coastlines and inland locations, leading to port closures and infrastructure damage. Floods submerged key transportation routes, causing widespread delays, while droughts hit agricultural outputs hard, resulting in essential commodity shortages for some commodities. The Panama Canal faced operational restrictions due to low water levels during the first half of 2024, intensifying logistical challenges. In the autumn of 2024, low water levels along the Mississippi River caused restrictions in barge vessel traffic which impacted movement of agricultural and energy products.

Prioritizing sustainability and resilience isn’t just about weathering climate events—it’s about staying competitive in an uncertain future.

First to report

September saw the emergence of Hurricane Milton, a powerful storm that swept across the Southern U.S., threatening to bring chaos to supply chain operations much like its predecessor Helene. With potential losses climbing to an estimated $85 billion and a significant risk to human life, businesses were on high alert to avoid potential disruptions. Amidst the storm signaling its approach, a client turned to Everstream Analytics for real-time insights and projections related to Milton's path and its implications for supply chain logistics. Would major ports close? Would key transport routes become impassable? Armed with accurate, real-time data, the company quickly identified which shipments and facilities were most at risk. Immediate communication lines were established with plants across the Americas and other affected regions. By leveraging this information, plant managers were able to assess their stock of raw materials and the status of customer orders. Through these strategic efforts, the company avoided additional air freight costs, contributing to reduced CO2 emissions—a key responsibility of the global lead for sustainability and transport. Effective risk management ensured customer satisfaction by maintaining regular operations despite the storm's challenges.
