Port Congestion Report: 28 May 2026

In Africa, a nationwide strike in Kenya that included transportation unions began on May 18 and disrupted cargo movement throughout the country. Four protestors were killed in the protest against high fuel prices, and roadways in the surrounding area of the Port of Mombasa were severely disrupted. The protestors have since reached an agreement with the government and suspended their strike.  

On May 20, the container ship ‘MV Valparaiso’ collided with the Nigerian-flagged oil tanker ‘MT Lady Martina’ near Onne Port, Nigeria. The collision blocked access to the channel and ship access to Port Harcourt and Onne port.  

Maritime operations in Asia & Oceania remain largely stable, although some fog-related closures have disrupted operations at ports in China.  

The Middle East and South Asia continue to be heavily disrupted by the ongoing conflict in the region and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The most recent draft proposal for peace includes a stipulation to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but until both sides reach an agreement, maritime traffic will continue to be severely disrupted in the area.  

In Europe, a nationwide strike will take place on May 29 in Italy, with workers from the road, rail, and airport sectors participating. Industry groups warn that the strike could affect operations at the ports of GenoaLivorno, and Gioia Tauro 

The Americas region saw several disruptions recently, including a 12-hour dockworkers strike that affected operations at the Port of Santos, Brazil. The Port of Buenaventura, Colombia, has been affected by blockades in the surrounding area that began on May 19. Hundreds of trucks have been stranded at the port and cargo movement is severely disrupted.  

Following a U.S. Executive Order that broadened sanctions on commerce with Cuban businesses, CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd suspended all cargo bookings to Cuba until further notice. The move could affect as much as 60% of Cuba’s shipping traffic by volume.

Africa 

Average wait times at the Port of Beira, Mozambique, stand at 14.8 days, according to Everstream Analytics, with Kuehne + Nagel reporting that wind gusts and rainfall have impacted operations.  

The Port of Conakry, Guinea, is reporting average wait times of 11.6 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, with severe congestion, storage shortages, and rainy season concerns cited. Hapag-Lloyd reports that berthing is being handled on a first-come, first-served basis with delays of more than 20 days.  

Average wait times at the Port of Banjul, The Gambia, reached 8.9 days, according to Everstream Analytics.  

A nationwide public transport strike in Kenya that began on May 18 disrupted cargo flows to and from the Port of Mombasa and along wider regional corridors, according to Kuehne + Nagel, with the port otherwise reporting average wait times of 5 days and maximum waits of up to 9 days due to long-term congestion, equipment shortages, and vessel bunching, according to Kuehne + Nagel and Hapag-Lloyd.  

The Port of Abidjan, Ivory Coast, is recording average wait times of 4.2 days, according to Everstream Analytics, with heavy operational disruption reported and Kuehne + Nagel noting berth delays for vessels of up to 2 days. High yard utilization and landside congestion are adversely affecting gate operations, according to Hapag-Lloyd.  

The Port of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, is facing average wait times of 4.2 days, according to Everstream Analytics. 

Asia & Oceania 

The Port of Manila, Philippines, continues to record the highest average wait times in the region at 3.6 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, with heavy berth congestion persisting at Manila North. Off-window vessels are facing delays exceeding 4 days, and yard utilization remains high, according to Hapag-Lloyd.  

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia, is reporting average wait times of 2.1 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, with berth blockages and crane installation works ongoing.  

Average wait times at the Port of Qingdao, China, reached 2 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, with fog-related port closures and vessel bunching contributing to the delays. Port disruptions related to visibility are expected to continue. The Port of Shanghai, China, is reporting average wait times of 1.8 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, with ongoing port closures due to poor visibility expected to sustain elevated waiting times. The Port of Ningbo, China, is facing average wait times of 1.7 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, with recent dense fog causing terminal closures. The Port of Xiamen, China, is recording wait times of 1.6 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel.  

Average wait times at the Port of Sydney, Australia, stand at 1.5 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel. 

Middle East & South Asia 

Average wait times at the Port of Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates, reached 10.7 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, with heavy disruption reported.  

The Port of Dammam, Saudi Arabia, is reporting average wait times of 4.5 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, with heavy disruption reported and adverse weather affecting marine operations. Hapag-Lloyd is managing vessel calls on a case-by-case basis. Average wait times at the Port of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, stand at 4 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, with heavy disruption continuing.  

The Port of Nhava Sheva, India, is facing average wait times of 2.7 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel. Hapag-Lloyd reports that volumes redirected due to disruptions in the Middle East are placing significant pressure on port operations, with high yard density, extended dwell times, and road congestion at the gate. 

Europe 

The Port of Felixstowe, United Kingdom, recorded the highest average wait times in the region at 2.3 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel.  

The ports of Dublin, Ireland, and Le Havre, France, are each reporting average wait times of 1.8 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel.  

Average wait times at the Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands, stand at 1.7 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, while Hapag-Lloyd reports high yard utilization at some terminals.  

The Port of Valencia, Spain, is facing average wait times of 1.6 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, with civil works for a fender system extension and dismantling of gantry crane number 7 causing temporary restrictions at the Levante pier.  

The Port of Koper, Slovenia, is recording average wait times of 1.5 days, according to Everstream Analytics.  

The Port of Hamburg, Germany, is reporting average wait times of 1.4 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, with high yard utilization and crane modernization works ongoing. 

Americas 

Average wait times at the Port of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico, reached 4 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, the highest in the region, while Hapag-Lloyd reports high yard utilization.  

The Port of Norfolk, United States, is reporting average wait times of 1.6 days, according to Everstream Analytics. Hapag-Lloyd is reporting that average import dwell time is 2.7 days and all cranes are operational.  

Average wait times at the Port of Montreal, Canada, stand at 1.4 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, with all vessels operating on proforma and rail dwell times stable at 4.6 days.  

The Port of Savannah, United States, is recording average wait times of 1.3 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel, and an average import dwell time of 3.7 days. 

South American ports recorded higher average wait times than their North American counterparts. The Port of Antofagasta, Chile, reported the highest average wait times, with average wait times standing at 3.6 days, according to Everstream Analytics.  

Average wait times at the Port of Santos, Brazil, reached 3.5 days, according to Everstream Analytics, with Kuehne + Nagel recording 1.8 days.  

The Port of Buenaventura, Colombia, is recording average wait times of 3.1 days, according to Everstream Analytics, with high yard utilization. Average wait times at the Port of Callao, Peru, stand at 3 days, according to Kuehne + Nagel.  

The Port of Paranaguá, Brazil, is facing average wait times of 2 days, according to Everstream Analytics, with high yard utilization, according to Hapag-Lloyd.  

Average wait times stand at 1.6 days at the Port of Montevideo, Uruguay, according to Kuehne + Nagel.
