The drought in Europe this summer has been unprecedented.
Since late May, there have been four record-setting heat waves in Europe. The heat, combined with extremely dry conditions, has caused major ramifications in supply chain sectors across the continent. These include:
- Agriculture: crop stress across much of Europe has been the most severe in many decades, reducing yields and production. Livestock stress has also been at the highest levels in decades impacting milk and protein production.
- Water resources: reduced river levels impacting transportation and barge rates, major soil moisture and irrigation deficits stressing crops
- Energy: record power demand for air conditioning
- Outdoor work: significantly reduced during heat waves
- Wildfires: largest areas of hectares burned in France and Spain this century
