Port Congestion Report 23 July 2026

In Africa, ports have faced disruptions from accidents and delays in supporting port infrastructure. The Port of Douala, Cameroon, saw disruptions to vessel traffic flows after an accident between the vessels MV Black Rhino and MV Sea Honor on July 12. Operations were restored by July 14. The Port of Apapa/Tin Can Island, Nigeria, has seen disruptions due to irregular operations from tanker trucks on the surrounding roadways since July 13. Heavy rainfall deteriorated road conditions, compounding delays. Mitigation measures are in place.

In Asia & Oceania, the most significant disruptions came from the passage of Tropical Cyclone Bavi. Ten ports across China, Japan, and Taiwan halted operations between July 10-13. A further six ports across China and Taiwan faced operational disruptions but not total closures. The ports have since gradually restored operations; however, backlogs may persist.

In the Middle East & Southeast Asia, the most significant disruptions are stemming from the ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran. The countries have traded military strikes, and some attacks have damaged vessels in the area, such as an attack on the MV GFS Galaxy on July 11. The Port of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, has seen an increase in congestion as rerouted vessel traffic has increased at the port following the end of the ceasefire. Outside of impacts from the conflict, the ports of Chittagong, Bangladesh, and Nhava Sheva, India, have seen disruptions from monsoon rains and strong winds.

Ports in Europe continue to see disruptions from strike action. The Port of Barcelona, Spain, will see workers strike on July 22. A chemical leak on July 14 disrupted operations at the Port of Antwerp, Belgium. The majority of terminals were cleared to resume operations on July 15; however, operations at the MSC PSA European Terminal (MPET) remain restricted.

Low water levels on the Rhine River are leading to cargo transport impacts as vessels are forced to sail only partially loaded. Some vessels are only able to load at 20% of capacity.

In the Americas, ports in South America faced disruptions from strikes and adverse weather. Workers launched strikes on July 4 at the Port of Montevideo, Uruguay, and on July 14 at the Port of Santos, Brazil. Operations at the ports of San Antonio and Valparaíso, Chile, were restricted from July 14-18 due to inclement weather.
