German floods disrupt over 25 suppliers

Heavy rainfall has led to severe flooding across many areas of southern Germany, in particular in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. After June 1, river levels at most rivers have significantly come down from their previous record-high levels. As floodwaters that burst the banks and flooded residential and industrial areas continue to recede, damage assessments and clean-up operations are currently in full swing in most areas.

Shipping on the Rhine River was halted for four days, and has since resumed after critical gauges dropped further. Train schedules and highways have been operating normally since June 5.

New rainfall over the last few days has caused new flooding near the Bodensee area in southern Germany, as well as in neighboring Austria, where the states of Styria and Burgenland have experienced severe flooding along rivers.

Over the next 7-10 days, only light rainfall totals are forecast for southern Germany and thus river levels will gradually recede. In Austria and adjacent areas, flood levels will remain high due to more rainfall totals in this area and in the southern extent of the Alps at least for another week.

Half of the German flood suppliers resume operations

Most of the severe flooding from June 1-3 has occurred along tributaries of the Danube or Rhine Rivers, located in either Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg, with the overflowing rivers flooding residential and industrial areas along the way. The most severe flooding was reported along the following rivers: Danube River (Donau), Isar, Regen, Abens, Ilm, Paar, Schmutter, Glonn, Zusam, Mindel, Fils, Schussen, Kammel, Günz, Amper and Wieslauf.

Everstream Analytics identified close to 30 companies ranging from automotive and industrial machinery to chemicals, pharmaceuticals and medical devices that reported flooding impacts on their operations. About 50% of these have so far resumed partial or full operations, but many remain impacted with unclear timelines to restart manufacturing.

Some of the most affected areas with companies still having resumed production include the towns of Rudersberg and Burgau in Baden-Württemberg as well as the city of Babenhausen in Bavaria.

New rainfall over the last few days has caused some new flooding near the Bodensee area in southern Germany, as well as in neighboring Austria, where the states of Styria and Burgenland have experienced severe flooding along rivers. The most affected towns and cities include Graz (and nearby districts of Deutschfeistritz, Eggersdorf, Weinitzen, Andritz, and Mariatrost) as well as Hartberg-Fürstenfeld, Oberwart, Wiesfleck, Schreibersdorf, Rudersdorf, Dobersdorf, and Übelbach.

After German floods, shipping resumes on Rhine River

Flooding impacted inland shipping along the Rhine River at multiple key sections between Basel, Karlsruhe and Mayence. However, all sections have been reopened for barge traffic, with no further disruptions being reported.

On the Danube River, shipping resumed on June 9 on the previously disrupted section between Kehlheim and Straubing in Germany, while other sections such as between Straubing and Kachlet remain closed until at least June 16. The Main-Danube canal link reopened on June 6.
