Rotterdam and Singapore Face the Highest Risk of Port Congestion Following Suez Canal Closure

Congestion Issues Mount in the Suez Canal Blockage Aftermath

Major container gateways in Europe and Southeast Asia have begun to experience congestion issues in the aftermath of a six-day blockage that occurred in the Suez Canal from March 23 to March 30. Even though vessel traffic resumed on April 3, shippers at Rotterdam and Singapore are bracing for knock-on effects from the Suez Canal ordeal.

According to Everstream Analytics, as more vessels continue to arrive, shippers should anticipate an increased risk of delays in the coming weeks. If issues worsen, carriers could opt to discharge cargo at alternative hubs nearby, amplifying congestion. Although some contingency measures have helped, fallout from the Suez Canal blockage could be seen throughout the month of April and into May.

This timely report examines the current state of port operations at several major gateways and explains the potential for serious disruption to global supply chains in the near future.
