COVID-19 Weekly Update, December 14th 2021

Everstream Analytics monitors and produces a weekly summary of supply chain impacts due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The update is provided free-of-charge to the industry.  

  • In the United Kingdom, authorities have increased the COVID-19 alert from Level 3 to Level 4, the second-highest on the country’s 5- level system. The change follows a rapid increase in Omicron cases.
  • Toyota Motor Corp. has announced it will extend production stoppage at its Kyushu and Tahara plants in Japan due to component shortages caused by COVID-19 infections in Southeast Asia, where Toyota’s suppliers are located. 
  • Various industries in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam have been suffering from labor shortages due to the impact of COVID-19 regulations such as mandatory vaccination and quarantine. On average, workforces have been reduced by 10 percent due to the shortages. 
  • The Norwegian government has further tightened restrictions to contain the expected increase in the omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus, particularly with regards to social contact.
  • The Cyprus authorities have imposed tighter restrictions on unvaccinated individuals and have adopted mandatory self-isolation for Omicron cases. The new restrictions will be in effect from December 15 until January 15, 2022. 
  • Shaoxing city in Zhejiang Province, China has entered a partial COVID-19 lockdown from 16:00 local time on December 9. The local government declared a level-I emergency status after 18 cases of COVID-19 were registered. Several chemical and pharma companies in the area have been closed. 
  • To contain the spread of COVID-19 infection, additional traffic restrictions were imposed in Manzhouli, China, with major bridges and highway checkpoints temporarily closed on selected days.
  • In addition, Chinese authorities have reduced customs clearance processes at the China-Mongolia land border crossing of Ganqimaodu, due to rising COVID-19 infections. The number of coal trucks entering China from Mongolia has been limited to 100 vehicles per day since December 7.
